Las horas vacías –opera for soprano, actress, chorus, piano and string orchestra– is a study of a solitary woman, addicted to internet, who lives in her own world of fantasy; an exploration about loneliness, the confusion between the real world and the imaginary, and an increasing sense of isolation in which an opulent society finds itself. Las horas vacías juxtaposes and combines different motifs from the music of the Renaissance and traditional Spanish polyphony, using a more contemporary language. It is a synthesis of styles closer to the sound and spirit of New York Downtown music – minimalism, post -minimalism, if one prefers– than that of the predominant tendencies of the European vanguard scene.
It premiered in 2007 in a concert version at the XII Semana de Música Sacra in Benidorm. Since then, it has been performed in Berlin, New York, St. Petersburg, Sao Paulo, Klaipėda (Lithuania), and now Las horas vacías comes to Madrid.
